Research against Breast Cancer

Research shows that there are more than 200,000 women who are diagnosed with breast cancer every year. This number will still grow as long as no cure has been around and the treatments around can only slow the inevitable.

Scientists have not yet discovered what causes the overgrowth of cancer cells into the body. Some suggest stress, the side effects of other prescriptions given and genetics since this can be passed on from the mother to the daughter.

Doctors first noticed this disease more than 50 years ago. A lot of progress has been made such as the types of surgery used, the treatments available and the drugs which can be given to patients.

The reason why many treatments have been developed is because the way the doctor can help a patient is different for every individual. An important factor is the size of the tumor as indicated by a medical conference held by the American Medical Association.

A good example is a woman who has been diagnosed with breast cancer because of an estrogen fueled tumor. More than 60% of those who have the same problem choose chemotherapy.

Doctors once thought that this can only be done if the cancer has gone over a certain size but trials show that someone can use a drug called tamoxifen which prevents the growth of the hormone instead of chemotherapy.

This also works for people who suffer from breast cancer but didn’t get this from estrogen since the chances of the disease from never recurring for the next 5 years are very high.

This is despite the fact that chemotherapy is the preferred choice to deal with this problem despite the other treatments that are available.

Although estrogen therapy may produce side effects, studies show that it does not increase the chances of breast cancer in post menopausal women.

Most patients have to deal with the side effects of the treatments given to treat breast cancer. These include weight gain, fatigue, depression, anxiety and insomnia. One study by a group of doctors believes that this can be prevented by adding exercise to one’s activity.

This is because muscle strength has improved and it increases the number of infection fighting T-cell levels in the body. The study was done using another group who didn’t exercise which shows a significant difference in the quality of life of breast cancer patients.

The studies suggest that even after this disease may have taken much from the person; things can go back to normal again. The individual can be healthy again with proper exercise and diet. The patient must first consult the doctor before any exercise can begin.

Another study showed that most patients who chose surgery to have the breast removed have no regrets. This conclusion was reached 580 patients who did the operation were surveyed and even if the cancer has not spread to that part yet.

This is because even if one of the breasts is not infected, this could spread later in the future especially if the person’s family has history with this disease. Surgery did not affect the individual in any way and live a happy and normal life similar to those who have never been diagnosed with this disease.

Breast cancer can happen to women who have bore children or not. The best advice of professionals is to conduct self examinations and have frequent visits to the doctor. This is because if the tumor is detected early, the cancer is still curable.
